If I close my eyes, I can imagine it.
I can breathe the cool damp air, feel the cobblestones beneath my feet.
My husband and I are walking behind.
Ahead, through the mist, I can see two small figures, darting and chasing.
They call to each other.
And their laughter echoes back to me.
One, the older, I know well.
I know his hair, his eyes. His laughter and his smile. The feel of his hand in mine. The curve of his cheek. His voice and his scent.
His joys and his fears are mine already.
The other, the younger, I can’t quite see.
The details are blurry, lost in the mist.
Unformed.
Or rather unknown.
Yet.
But I can hear their laughter.
Feel the warmth of their love and the ease of their affection.
I draw comfort from their closeness, their familiarity.
The purity and timelessness of their relationship.
If I close my eyes, I can imagine it.
And, soon, the mist will lift.
